The clearest account is The PIE News report of 7 July 2026, which explains that the test was developed by German universities in collaboration with g.a.s.t., with earlier development supported by the German Academic Exchange Service, and that results will appear on APS certificates. The German Embassy in New Delhi's science section put the boundary plainly: the dMAT does not replace APS document verification or the formal recognition of university degrees. In other words, the two checks Indian applicants already know, the authenticity check of marksheets and degrees and the recognition of the qualification, stay exactly as they are. What is new is a measure of how you reason, taken under exam conditions, that universities can read alongside your grades.

Why now? Indian master's applications to Germany have grown faster than any other country's, and universities have said for years that grades from thousands of Indian institutions are hard to compare. A single test, taken by everyone in the same fields, gives admissions offices a common yardstick. For a strong student from a lesser-known college, that is an opportunity rather than a hurdle: the dMAT exam Germany is a chance to show reasoning ability that a percentage from an unfamiliar university cannot.

Who has to take the dMAT and who is exempt?
